i use a frame like i would fell a tree
(2018-22)
Multi-channel film installation with sound and one object
i use a frame like i would fell a tree is a journey into the artist's photographic album. It deals with the family portrait as supposedly neutral historical document and preferred object of memory. At the same time the possibility of opening up the two-dimensional photographic plane is being challenged. In the film parade/ lamento Katrin lays bare both practice and the very process of creating a photographic image. In a filmed re-enactment of the family photographs professional and amateur performers are waiting to be positioned within the rectangle of the camera frame in real time. The tableaux emerge and fall apart in an instant. Private motifs and images from art history are being mixed. – In a second group of work, a series of filmed performances for the camera, the artist examines her own position in different environments. Amid this film installation governs a huge, empty wooden frame: What constitutes space? What is the difference between repetition and situation? Who is watching?
